This session is intended to provide beginners with the knowledge and confidence to start strength training (also called resistance training) and to provide an evidence-informed update to those with experience strength training. This discussion will cover:
Evidence-informed update on the importance of strength training for health, wellness and longevity
Types of exercise adaptations (E.g. strength vs. hypertrophy vs. endurance)
Methods of assessing aspects of physical fitness and fitness level
How to set goals based on your results
Training principles and sample protocols for increasing strength/hypertrophy/endurance
How to progress programs to achieve your goals
The benefits of strength training after age 55 are numerous. Studies have shown that regular strength training improves bone, muscle, and overall health and is associated with decreased falls, cognitive decline, and depression.
